Frequently Asked Questions
What is Varmakalai?
Varmakalai is a Tamil martial and healing tradition built around the varmam, the vital points of the body. The same knowledge is used both to disable an attacker and to relieve pain, which is what makes it unusual among martial arts.
How many varmam points are there?
Tradition counts 108 varmam points, though some texts record 96 and others describe over a thousand sub-points. What matters is not the count but knowing each point location, depth, angle and the pressure it takes.
Can I learn varmam points from a book or video?
No. The position of a point varies from person to person with build, age and body type, and the knowledge can injure if applied wrongly. It is taught in person, gradually, once an instructor can see a student has the control for it.
