7 Benefits of Varmakalai Training for Kids and Students

Parents often ask us: “Is martial arts training right for my child?” With Varmakalai, the answer goes far beyond kicks and punches. Here are seven benefits we see in young students at JADMAA every week.

1. Practical Self-Defence Awareness

Children learn age-appropriate techniques to stay safe, along with the awareness to recognise and avoid risky situations.

2. Physical Fitness and Flexibility

Structured drills build strength, stamina, coordination, and flexibility — a healthy alternative to screen time.

3. Discipline and Routine

Traditional training instils respect, punctuality, and consistent practice habits that carry into schoolwork.

4. Focus and Concentration

Learning precise movements and sequences trains the mind to concentrate — many parents report better attention in class.

5. Confidence Without Aggression

Varmakalai teaches students to be calm and confident. Knowing they can protect themselves reduces fear and builds self-esteem.

6. Cultural Connection

Students grow up connected to Tamil heritage, learning an art with deep roots in our history.

7. A Clear Growth Path

From our Kids Self-Defence program (ages 6–12), students can progress through Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced levels — and one day even train as instructors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can children start Varmakalai?

Kids Self-Defence Training at JADMAA takes children from age 6. Children aged 10 and above can join Basic Varma Training, which teaches the full tradition.

Is Varmakalai safe for children?

Yes, when taught properly. No varmam point striking is taught to children at any stage. Contact drills are controlled and supervised, and children are paired by size and age.

Will my child become aggressive?

The opposite is usually reported. The training code is explicit that what is learned is for protection, never for starting something. A child who uses it to bully loses their place in the class.
