About Course

Duration: Self-paced, about 2 hours  •  Fee: Free

This free online course exists so that nobody has to pay money to find out whether Varmakalai is for them. Work through it at your own pace, from anywhere. There is no fee and no obligation to enroll in anything afterwards.

What you will learn

  • What Varmakalai is and where it comes from — the varmam points, the tradition’s place among Tamil martial arts, and its link to Siddha healing.
  • The student code of conduct — what is expected of a student toward their Asan, their fellow students, and the knowledge itself. This has always come before technique.
  • Warm-up and flexibility routines — the foundational preparation used before every session, which you can begin practising immediately.
  • Basic stances — the positions that underlie all later training.

What you need

No prior experience, comfortable clothing, a small clear space and a water bottle. Any age.

What this course is not

It is not a substitute for supervised training, and it does not teach varmam point application. Varmakalai’s striking knowledge is taught in person, gradually, once an instructor can see that a student has the control to handle it. Anyone offering that knowledge over video to a stranger is not teaching the tradition responsibly.

Afterwards

Students who want to continue usually join Basic Varma Training at one of our branches, arriving with the vocabulary and etiquette already in place.

Branches: Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Ariyalur. Questions: +91 93452 20020.
