Beginner’s Guide: Your First 3 Months of Varmakalai Training

Thinking about joining Varmakalai but not sure what the journey looks like? Here is an honest look at what your first three months in our Basic Varmakalai Training course involve — and what you can realistically expect to gain.

Month 1: Foundation

Your body learns the language of the art — stances, footwork, basic strikes, and conditioning. Expect some muscle soreness in the first weeks; it fades as your fitness builds. Discipline and class etiquette are part of the training from day one.

Month 2: Coordination and Technique

Movements start to connect — combinations, defensive responses, and partner-safe drills. Flexibility and stamina noticeably improve, and techniques begin to feel natural rather than mechanical.

Month 3: Application

You apply what you have learned in structured practice: responding to common situations, controlled partner work, and your first progress assessment. Most students are surprised how far they have come in twelve weeks.

What You Need to Start

  • Comfortable training clothes and water — that’s it.
  • No prior fitness level required; training scales to you.
  • Suitable for students and adults aged 10+.

After Basic Training

Graduates progress to the 6-month Intermediate course, and later the 1-year Advanced course — the pathway that leads towards certification and instructor training.
